A growing number of Canadian cities now match or even exceed U.S. cities in violent and property crime. Toronto and Vancouver now have higher rates of property crime than New York and Los Angeles.

“Our criminal justice system is failing on so many important metrics. Judicial decisions by the Supreme Court of Canada have made it more difficult to impose long sentences,” said Dave Snow, an associate professor of political science at the University of Guelph and co-author of a report on urban violent crime in Canada.

While these statistics are enlightening, I would like to see a study that identifies the racial and citizenship demographics, including whether the offenders are born in Canada citizens or immigrants, refugees, foreign students or temporary workers; and also, if they were not born in Canada, their countries of origin.
